Axxes expert launches supplement to book on Polder SRE.
Following the book on Polder SRE written by two Dutch colleagues at HCS, Axxes consultant Gertjan Roggemans launches a paper. In it, he provides an introduction to DevOps and how it has evolved over the years.
Last September, Jan Buurman and Benoit Schipper, two experts from the Dutch company HCS, presented their book "Polder SRE - An Octopus Among Dutch Tulips". In it, they describe how the Dutch market deals with SRE, which stands for Site Reliability Engineering.
Gertjan Roggemans, DevOps and System Engineer at Axxes, was immediately intrigued by the book. Over the past decades, SRE has been experiencing a strong surge. "Everyone talks about SRE, but for many, it remains a mystery. Thanks to the book by Jan and Benoit, it becomes clear what exactly an organization can gain from it," says Gertjan.
SRE as Part of DevOps
After reading the book, Gertjan took it upon himself to write a paper on the subject. In it, he discusses the history of DevOps and the role that SRE plays as a bridge between development and operations.
"For a long time, applications were developed in completely isolated environments, where they were also run and maintained. It was a cumbersome way of working that led to frustrations and problems. As early as the 1990s, companies tried to bring Development and Operations closer together, but it wasn't until 2009 that these initiatives really gained momentum and DevOps emerged as we know it today," says Gertjan.
DevOps is primarily a mindset that forces organizations to simplify, speed up, and reduce the cost of IT so that it can provide more value. It mainly focuses on what needs to be done, while SRE is about how to do it. This is achieved by automating tasks and increasing the reliability of the supported services.
Discover the Book
"The release of the Polder SRE book, which looked at how the Dutch approach SRE, was a great opportunity for us at Axxes to peek over the proverbial fence," says Gertjan. "In my addition to the book, I focused mainly on the evolution of DevOps over the years and the rise of the DevOps Engineer."
